5 Signs Your Business Website Is Costing You Customers

A bad website is worse than no website. Customers judge your business in seconds — here are the red flags that make them click away and call your competitor instead.

1. It takes more than 3 seconds to load

53% of mobile users abandon a website that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. If your site is slow — large uncompressed images, cheap hosting, old WordPress plugins — potential customers are leaving before they even see your phone number. Google also uses page speed as a ranking factor, so a slow site hurts you in search results too.

2. It's not mobile-friendly

More than 60% of local service searches happen on a phone. If your website isn't designed for mobile — tiny text, buttons too close together, horizontal scrolling — customers will struggle to use it and leave. A mobile-friendly site isn't optional in 2025. It's the baseline.

3. Your phone number isn't obvious

4. It looks like it was built in 2010

Customers judge your professionalism by how your website looks. An outdated design — stock photos, cluttered layout, garish colours, small fonts — signals that your business might be the same. You don't need a flashy site. You need a clean, modern one that says 'I'm a professional who takes their work seriously.' First impressions form in 50 milliseconds.

5. It doesn't say where you operate

If your website doesn't clearly state the areas you serve, Google can't rank you for local searches — and customers don't know if you'll come to them. Your homepage should mention your city or service area prominently. 'Plumbing services in Chicago and surrounding suburbs' is better for both customers and Google than just 'Plumbing services'.
