Google Business Profile: The Free Tool Most Tradespeople Are Getting Wrong

February 12, 2025 · 5 min read

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a potential customer sees. Here's how to set it up properly and why most local businesses are leaving calls on the table.

What is a Google Business Profile?

When you search for a local business on Google — 'plumber near me' or 'HVAC repair Chicago' — you see a map with business listings, phone numbers, reviews, and opening hours. That's the Google Business Profile (GBP). It's completely free to set up and it's one of the most powerful things you can do to get more local customers.

Most tradespeople either haven't claimed it or set it up wrong

Common mistakes we see: the business is listed at the wrong address or a P.O. Box. The phone number is outdated. The business category is too broad ('contractor' instead of 'plumber'). Hours are wrong or missing. There are zero photos. The profile was set up once and never touched again. Any one of these issues costs you calls.

How to set up your GBP correctly

Go to business.google.com and claim your listing. Use your exact business name — don't stuff it with keywords. Set your service area (the postcodes or towns you actually serve). Choose a specific primary category (e.g. 'Plumber' not 'Home Services'). Add your real phone number. Set accurate hours. Upload at least 5 photos of your work, your van, or your team. Fill in the services section with every type of job you do.

Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for local search

A plumber with 40 reviews at 4.6 stars will appear above a plumber with 4 reviews at 5 stars almost every time. After you finish a job and the customer is happy, ask them directly: 'Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It helps a lot.' Then send them a direct link. Over time, this compounds into a major competitive advantage.

Post updates to stay active

Google rewards active profiles. Use the 'Posts' feature in your GBP to share updates, seasonal offers, or job examples. Even one post a month signals to Google that your business is active and engaged. Most of your competitors aren't doing this — which makes it an easy win.

Link your GBP to a real website

Your GBP is more powerful when it links to a real website with matching business information. Consistent name, address, and phone number (NAP) across your website and GBP builds trust with Google. If your website says 'Dave's Plumbing' but your GBP says 'Dave's Plumbing & Heating Services', that inconsistency hurts your ranking.
